Meet The Disruptors: Ricky Baez of DisruptHR Orlando

Who are the people that are taking the lead in disrupting the future of work?

They’re the official Disruptors (Organizers) of DisruptHR events held in cities around the world. Each week, we’ll introduce you to one of these intelligent, inspiring, and beautiful people (okay, pick two) who have stepped up, and volunteered to organize a Disrupt HR event in their city.

Who are you, and what do you do in your “day job”?

My name is Ricky Baez and I own Baezco Learning, an HR consultancy organization focusing on learning and development.

How did you first hear about DisruptHR?

My partner, Leslie Mizerak, brought it to my attention.

Why did you decide to raise your hand and become an organizer for DisruptHR events in Orlando?

It was Leslie’s idea first. She heard about the meetings and thought “We can so do this!” She pitched the idea to me and it took me literally .01 sec for me to say yes!

How many events have you organized?

We are about to launch our 4th event in Orlando (4/11)! We average around 60-70 people per event.

What types of people/industries have attended your events?

I’m surprised at the wide range of industries that are represented at the events. It’s not just HR people – we get people from business owners to musical artists.

What are you most proud of that has come out of being involved with/organizing DisruptHR events?

The one thing that really stands out to me is how much fun the audience has at the events. I especially love seeing their faces at the beginning (“Here I am and yet another boring HR conference”) and then the change at the end (“HOLY #&$^ that was awesome!).

What kind of feedback have you received from those who attended prior DisruptHR Orlando events?

Our very first event in downtown Orlando back in 2016. The event was held at a comedy club and the stage beautifully decorated, the lighting was perfect, and we had a bar!

After the event was over a lady came up to me and told me that in her 25 years in HR, she has never been to an event where she laughed and learned so much at the same time.

What is your favorite DisruptHR Talk, and why?

I had such a great time presenting “The “H” in HR” talk in Disrupt Orlando 2.0 in March of 2017. HR can be perceived as boring and “stuffy,” especially when you dive deep into policies and handbooks and blah blah blah. But when you focus on the “Human” aspect of HR things can get very interesting and, well, “exciting” as well:)

Based off of the Talks and conversations at your events, what do you feel are the areas with the biggest opportunity for disruption?

I would love to see a bigger social media push! Hashtag everything! This is such a great concept that it needs to reach as many people as possible!

What excites you or frustrates you about the future of work, your career and/or DisruptHR?

What excites me about the future of work? How much fun people are starting to have at the “office.” For the longest time “work” was the antonym of “fun.” But recently business leaders started to create work environments that are fun and exciting and jump starts creativity. THAT’s how work is supposed to be. The earlier leaders realize the value in creating such environments the farther their businesses will go!
