Meet The Disruptors: Elizabeth Veliz of DisruptHR Hampton Roads

Who are the people that are taking the lead in disrupting the future of work?

They‰Ûªre the official Disruptors (Organizers) of DisruptHR events held in cities around the world. Each week, we‰Ûªll introduce you to one of these intelligent, inspiring, and beautiful people (okay, pick two) who have stepped up, and volunteered to organize a Disrupt HR event in their city.

Who are you, and what do you do in your ‰ÛÏday job‰Û?

Elizabeth Veliz, MBA, SPHR, SHRM-SCP; Vice President of HR, Faneuil, Inc.

How did you first hear about DisruptHR?

Through a colleague and friend of mine Mark Tunstall.

Why did you decide to raise your hand and become an organizer for DisruptHR events in Hampton Roads?

I believe that HR is stagnant. It needs to be blown up and rebuilt in the most rebellious manner possible. I am not your “typical” anything – I love that DisruptHR is a lot like me. NOT TYPICAL.

How many events have you organized?

One so far. We had about 100 people attend. We are schedule for another one next month.

What types of people/industries have attended your events?

Practitioners, consultants, vendors, business owners.

What are you most proud of that has come out of being involved with/organizing DisruptHR events?

The continued interest in hearing more about the events and changing the way we practice HR and how HR is viewed.

What kind of feedback have you received from those who attended prior DisruptHR Hampton Roads events?

Yes, I continue to be referred to as being one of the few “legit” people in my field. I mean, WOW, how crazy is that?

What is your favorite DisruptHR Talk, and why?

There was one I saw online about Idea Sex In Talent Management by Greg Roche. Definitely my favorite. It just challenges the idea that ideas are linear and singular in nature when in fact the combination of good ideas is extremely powerful.

Based off of the Talks and conversations at your events, what do you feel are the areas with the biggest opportunity for disruption?

HR in general…the whole thing needs complete disruption. Talent Management would need specific focus.

What excites you or frustrates you about the future of work, your career and/or DisruptHR?

What frustrates me? The continued myth around work life balance. It does not exist. So rather than try to find this mythical thing called “balance” how about we work towards creating synergy between the two?
