Who are the people that are taking the lead in disrupting the future of work?
TheyÛªre the official Disruptors (Organizers) of DisruptHR events held in cities around the world. Each week, weÛªll introduce you to one of these intelligent, inspiring, and beautiful people (okay, pick two) who have stepped up, and volunteered to organize a Disrupt HR event in their city.
Tim Sackett of DisruptHRåÊDetroit (Disruptor #194)

Who are you, and what do you do in your ÛÏday jobÛ?
Tim Sackett, President of HRU Technical Resources, Chief Storyteller at Fistful of Talent, President-Elect at the Association of Talent Acquisition Professionals (ATAP), Husband to a Hall of Fame wife, Dad to 3 boys and one Mini-Australian Labradoodle (Scout).
I’m not a playa, I just blog a lot, like every day at TimSackett.Com. Google “Tim Sackett” you find me and a Truck Driver Chaplain. I am NOT the truck driver chaplain.
Oh, and I’m also the World’s Foremost Expert on Workplace Hugging! Creeped out yet?
How did you first hear about DisruptHR?
Some woman named Jennifer McClure told me about it. Nice lady, likes horses and Diet Coke.
Why did you decide to raise your hand and become an organizer for DisruptHR events in Detroit?
Because I’m a glutton for punishment. Like I needed one more stupid thing in my life to do! 🙂
I think it stems back to my childhood, and probably some deep psychological issue in not being a part of the cool kid crowd/growing up a ginger. Oh, Am I sharing too much?
Actually, I thought it was a brilliant idea. Having presented at ‘normal’ HR conferences for years, I had this feeling no one really wants to listen to anyone for an hour. My ADHD kicks in and I want you to get to the point! In five minutes, you get to the point!
How many events have you organized?
One. In downtown Detroit, and I call it “HR Prom”.
We went big! Rented out the Garden Theater in midtown Detroit, had 300+ register to attend, 12 sponsors, and 12 speakers. It was packed. It was fun. About 99% of the folks loved it. The other 1%, well, that’s HR – and if you’re doing “Disruptive” correctly, you better not have 100% love it!
What types of people/industries have attended your events?
I would say the vast majority of our audience was HR and Recruiting pros and leaders. We had HR and Talent leaders bring their entire team for a fun, team building-type night.
What are you most proud of that has come out of being involved with/organizing DisruptHR events?
The energy it created within a pretty disconnected HR community within Detroit. Detroit’s HR community is probably like most cities where if you work for one company, you’re probably never speaking to peers at another company. Disrupt really opened up so many eyes to what an HR community could be within the city.
What kind of feedback have you received from those who attended prior DisruptHR Detroit events?
We had so many people tell us how much fun they had, and that they didn’t think an HR event could be fun.
But the best comments I got were from HR pros and leaders who wanted to come back and try and get on stage! Something about the event sparked them to want to have the courage to get up on stage and try something new. That’s pretty awesome!
What is your favorite DisruptHR Talk, and why?
My favorite DisruptHR Talk is my own! How cocky is that!? I did one at DisruptHR Cayman Islands titled “Failure is the New Black”.
Failure Is The New Black | Tim Sackett | DisruptHR Talks from DisruptHR on Vimeo.
The organizer told us two things we should specifically stay away from because of the very conservative nature of the Cayman people – 10 Homosexuality, and 20 Religion. So, I came out and immediately asked, “Where my Church people at!”, and basically started a sermon! Plus, I HATE how our society embraces the concept of failure as a good thing.
Based off of the Talks and conversations at your events, what do you feel are the areas with the biggest opportunity for disruption?
Every. Single. Area. In. HR. And. Talent.
What excites you or frustrates you about the future of work, your career and/or DisruptHR?
We have a major problem in HR and Talent when it comes to technology. We need technology to make us better, but we are acting like our grandparents when the VCR clocked blinked “12:00” for all those years! We have no idea how to change the clock!?!åÊHR and Talent Leaders are acting like our VCR-Inept Grandparents when it comes to HR and Talent technology, which means IT is selecting the technology we are forced to use.
The future of HR should be HR and TA selecting their own technology. If you are the ‘expert’ in HR or TA for your organization, why would you ever allow someone in IT who knows nothing about HR or TA to select your major systems you’re going to use? IT, Operations, Marketing, Finance, etc. would never allow that to happen!
